Sacristans assist the priest before and after Mass on weekdays by helping set up the credence table, choosing a song, and maintaining candles. During Mass they help wash the priests hands and ring the bells. 

Additionally, Sacristans may help with setup before a funeral and care for linens. They keep the vestments and altar linens cleaned and pressed and make sure all the liturgical vessels are cleaned and polished.
